Beer-Battered Fish and Chips

In The Kitchen With Kate

The beloved English comfort food gets a tasty, German twist.

  • Chips:
  • 2 potatoes
  • Olive oil
  • Salt & pepper, to taste
  • Batter:
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 cup German beer
  • 2 cod fillets
  • Salt & pepper, to taste
  • Extra flour
  • Sunflower oil

Let's get Cooking...

  1. Cut potatoes into chips of even size and toss in olive oil, salt & pepper. Spread evenly onto a baking tray.
  2. Place into a preheated oven at 400°F for 30 minutes, or until cooked through.
  3. For the batter, whisk the flour and baking powder together, then carefully pour in the German beer. Whisk until well combined, smooth and shiny.
  4. Season the fish on both sides with salt & pepper, and sprinkle with a light dusting of flour. This will help the batter stick.
  5. Coat the fish in batter, let the excess drip off and carefully place the fish into a medium-sized pan of oil at 375°F. (If you don't have a thermometer, the oil is ready when a drop of batter dropped into a pan sizzles.) Be very careful with hot oil.
  6. Cook for approximately 4 minutes, depending on size of fish. (Cook 2 minutes each side if shallow frying.)
  7. Transfer cooked fish to paper towels to drain any excess oil.
  8. Serve with chips.
