Mozzarella en Carrozza

Jen Phanomrat

This cheesy fried sandwich is the delicious love child of mozzarella sticks and grilled cheese.

  • 4 bread slices, crusts removed
  • 1/4 pounds fresh mozzarella
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • Canola oil for frying
  • Optional puttanesca filling: capers, anchovy fillets, kalamata olives, sundried tomatoes, fresh basil
  • Marinara sauce for dipping

Let's get Cooking...

  1. Place 2 slices of mozzarella in between 2 slices of bread. If you're adding the puttanesca filling, combine those ingredients in a mortar and pestle or processor, and spread onto the bread before adding the cheese. Keep the sandwich whole or slice diagonally into triangles.
  2. Prep the dredging station: place flour in one dish, and combine eggs and milk in another dish. Coat sandwiches in flour, shake off the excess, and soak in the egg mixture.
  3. Heat oil in a pan and fry sandwiches on both sides, until golden brown and crispy.
  4. Serve alone or with marinara sauce for dipping.
